Children Of Men - Opening Sequence Analysis

Children of Men begins with a sound bridge of digetic sound, the screen remains black whilst we begin to hear a news report of the death of the so called "youngest person on the planet". this becomes apperent from the first shot which is of a room full of people who are gathered round watching this new broadcast on a tv. this grabs the interest of the views instantly as something really bad has happened and the characters are reacting as if this is very significant. then we see that the boy who died lived from 2009-2027 which shows us both that this is sent in the future and that there is something unusual going on because they refered to a 19 year old as the youngest person on the planet. the people in the room are looking up at the tv screen giving the feeling of importance of what they are looking up at. the camera angle is coming slighty from the side causing the characters to be looking past the camera, this makes you feel as if you are there; almost as if you are standing behind the counter in the shop. this allows you to become involved with the film in the sense that you begin to feel the tension of the situation that is being explained by the news reporter. the camera then begins to track clive owen as he begins to move towards the exit of this shop, this tells us he is either one of or the main character in this film. As he approaches the door a red bus passes by which sets the scene as this is a london bus. shortly after 'london 16th november 2027' appears on the screen. there is also a policeman which shows us this is set in london by the uniform. clive owen stops to pour him self a drink, seemed to be alcohol which is giving us an insight to his character traits; maybe he is an alcoholic? the camera slowly pans around clive owen as he in stationary, at this point is it peaceful; the roads are busy but it is still fairly peaceful. tension is building as the camera pans around clive owen then when it reaches the reverse angle which is now facing back towards the shop, we then hear that huge digetic sound 'BANG' and some kind of explosion has occured. we now wish to find out what has happened. this is clearly set to be a thriller.
